Terms of Use

1. What this service is and who provides it

Vocabary is a vocabulary learning app you can use with your own word list. The app, the information pages on vocabary.com and the backup service you use when you create an account are provided by the operator of the Vocabary app. Contact: info@vocabary.com. If the legal business name or address is defined separately, this section will be updated.

The learning engine is free. Building sets, importing files, studying, statistics and streaks do not require payment. An optional Pro subscription (section 9) adds cloud sync, working the Words You Struggle With set, tap-to-learn reading and AI-assisted sentence checking/stories; if you do not subscribe, nothing other than those added features is restricted.

An account is not required. Vocabary is fully functional without one: you can build lists, import files, study and follow your review schedule. None of that requires signing in.

An account exists for Pro's cloud sync. Creating an account by itself does not back up your lists; syncing across devices is part of the Pro subscription (section 9). Your lists are backed up only through Pro cloud sync; the app has no feature for downloading a backup as a file. An account does not unlock or lock any other feature of the app.

By downloading and using the app, you accept these terms.

2. Your account

If you choose to create an account, you take on a few simple responsibilities:

• Give a working email address. If you lose access to your account, that address is our only way to reach you. If the address you give is one you cannot access, we may not be able to restore your account.
• Your password is yours to protect. Keeping it confidential is your responsibility. If you think someone else has it, change it immediately and let us know.
• One account, one person. An account is meant for a single person. If several people share one account, records get mixed and backup will not work the way you expect.
• Age. You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. If you are under 18, create it with the knowledge and consent of a parent or guardian. If a higher age limit applies where you live, that limit applies. We set no age limit for using the app without an account.

You can manage your account from inside the app.

3. Your content stays yours

The word lists, meanings, example sentences and notes you upload or create in the app belong to you. We claim no rights over them.

What we will not do: we do not publish your lists, show them to other users, sell them, use them for advertising, or use them to train artificial intelligence models.

When you create an account and use backup, you give us permission to carry out the technical steps needed to store your lists and return them to your own devices — storing, copying and delivering them to you. That permission covers nothing more, and it ends when you delete your account.

4. Limits and fair use

To keep the backup service working for everyone, a few limits apply:

• Record cap. There is an upper limit on how many records one account can back up. This is a real limit and it is enforced on the server. If you reach it, you can keep using the app, but you will need to free up room before new records can be backed up. The current limit is shown inside the app.
• Do not overload the service. Sending bulk automated requests, creating multiple accounts to get around the limits, or generating loads that disrupt normal operation is not acceptable.
• No reverse engineering. Decompiling, disassembling or modifying the app or the service, or building a derivative service that way, is not permitted. Cases expressly allowed by law are reserved.

Where use goes beyond these limits, we may temporarily restrict an account; section 7 explains how we handle that.

5. Third-party content and copyright

Part of the ready-made word catalogue bundled with the app is derived from third-party sources published under open licenses (such as CC BY-SA and MIT). You can find the attributions and license terms on the Attributions and Licenses page. Those parts keep the license of their source.

You are responsible for the copyright of the lists you upload yourself. If you are uploading content from a book, a course or another publication, it is up to you to make sure you have the right to use it. Because your lists are only ever returned to you, that content is not shared with anyone; uploading content you have no right to is still your responsibility.

The Vocabary name, logo, app interface and the content we produce ourselves belong to us.

6. Availability of the service

Vocabary is provided free of charge, and we make no promise of uninterrupted service. Maintenance, technical faults, problems at an infrastructure provider or causes outside our control may make the service unavailable from time to time. While backup is interrupted, the app keeps working on your device.

Features may change over time: we may add new ones, and we may remove or change ones that turn out not to work.

If we shut the service down entirely, we will give reasonable notice in advance, and during that time your backed up lists sync to your device and stay there after the service closes. We can promise this because the app already keeps your data on your device and works without an account.

7. Ending your account

You can delete your account at any time. You start the deletion from inside the app; if you cannot reach the app, use the route described on the Delete your account page. Your account closes immediately and you cannot sign in again. Your backed-up lists and study records are held on the server for 30 days and then permanently removed. Technical traces of deleted records that remain on the server are pruned within 180 days at the latest.

Data on your device is separate: deleting your account does not delete the lists on your device, and deleting the app from your device does not close your account. You need to do each one separately.

Deletion cannot be undone; the lists on your device are not deleted.

When we may suspend an account. We suspend an account only to protect the operation of the service: where the limits in section 4 are deliberately and repeatedly exceeded, where use is intended to damage the service, or where use is unlawful. In such cases we will warn you first where possible, write down the reason, and give you reasonable time; the lists on your device are not deleted. We do not close accounts without warning unless the situation is urgent and serious.

8. Warranty and limitation of liability

Learning outcomes are not guaranteed. Vocabary is a study tool built on spaced repetition; how much you learn depends on how much you study. We do not promise a particular exam result, score or level.

Backup is not a single point of safety. We keep backup as reliable as we can, but no online service is perfect. Before you delete the app or reset your phone, make sure syncing has finished; changes that have not synced exist only on your device.

The service is provided "as is". To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect damages, or for loss of profit or data, arising from use of the app.

Your consumer rights are reserved. The limitations in this section do not affect the statutory rights you have as a consumer that cannot be waived by contract. If you live in Turkey, your rights under Turkish consumer law continue to apply; if you live in the European Union or the European Economic Area, so do the mandatory consumer protection rules of your own country.

9. Pro subscription

Vocabary's learning engine, unlimited sets/lists, statistics and streaks are always free and never require a subscription.

Pro is an optional paid subscription tier that adds: cloud backup plus multi-device sync, working the Words You Struggle With set, tap-to-learn reading, and AI-assisted sentence checking and stories.

Price and term. Pro can be purchased yearly (₺399.99/year) or monthly (₺99.99/month). A 7-day free trial is offered only on the yearly plan; if you do not cancel before the trial ends, your chosen plan is charged automatically.

Auto-renewal. The subscription renews automatically. To stop a renewal you can cancel the subscription through Google Play at any time; after cancelling you keep Pro until the end of the current period and the next period is not charged. The renewal charge is taken by Google Play on the period's end date.

Sentence-checking and story allowances. The daily/weekly allowances (quotas) for these features, and whether they are turned on or off, are managed on our server; they may be adjusted or temporarily paused without advance notice to prevent abuse or to balance cost. Such a change does not affect the price you paid; the rest of your subscription (cloud sync, working the Words You Struggle With set, tap-to-learn reading) continues unaffected.

Cancellation. You can cancel the subscription at any time through Google Play (Google Play app → Payments & subscriptions). Cancelling keeps your Pro access until the end of the period you have already paid for; there is no partial refund for unused time.

Refunds. Refunds are subject to Google Play's refund policy; you need to use Google Play Help to request one, we cannot process refunds directly.

When the subscription ends (cancellation, trial expiry or a failed payment): cloud sync stops; everything accumulated on your device up to that point stays on your device and nothing is deleted. Your cloud copy on the server is kept for 90 more days — if you resubscribe within that time, sync resumes where it left off; after 90 days only the server-side cloud copy is deleted, data on your device is not affected. Stories you generated with AI stay on your device and are not deleted when the subscription ends. The app has no feature for downloading a backup as a file; when the subscription ends, the data on your device stays on your device.

Price changes. If prices change, we will give advance notice as required by Google Play's rules; the price of a subscription period already in progress is never changed retroactively.

How sentence-checking and story inputs are processed and sent to third-party AI providers is explained in our Privacy Policy, section 9.

10. Free basics, Pro as an added tier

Vocabary's learning engine is always free and there is no mandatory payment in the app. Pro is an optional additional tier (see section 9); unless you purchase it, your access to the learning engine, unlimited sets/lists, statistics and streaks is never restricted.

Fact: the words you have added yourself and your study history stay on your device — you keep access to them for as long as you do not delete them from your device. Newly added paid features (Pro) are announced clearly in advance; no payment will ever start without your approval.

If this text changes. If there is a meaningful change to these terms, we will tell you in the app and update the effective date on this page. For small changes such as wording fixes, only the date is updated. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the new text; if you do not accept it, you can delete your account and keep using the app without one.

Governing law. These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Türkiye. This does not affect rights arising from the mandatory consumer protection rules of your own country, or your right to bring proceedings before the courts of your own country.
